Vehicle Access Permits & Beach Access

4WDriving North Stradbroke IslandNorth Stradbroke Island has great four-wheel-drive bush tracks and kilometres of sandy beaches you can drive on. Vehicle Access Permits are required for driving in designated beach and bush areas on the Island. The $45.25 annual permit fee maintains, improves and supports the Island's natural areas. Buy one online, or purchase at our offices on the Island. Don't forget that your permit sticker must be displayed at all times, and that your permit can be cancelled or suspended by Authorised Officers should you not comply with the conditions of issue. Take the time to download our 4WDriving Brochure to ensure that your four wheel drive experience is fun, safe, and kind to the environment.
NOTE: All-wheel-drive vehicles, motor bikes and quad-bikes are not permitted in the Recreation Area. Should you be found with a permit affixed to an all-wheel-drive vehicle, the permit will be confiscated and any fees paid will be forfeited.
Should you sell your vehicle or require a replacement permit, please refer to our Vehicle Access Permit Terms & Conditions for what to do.

Driving Information

Checking 4WD tyres North Stradbroke IslandDriving on sand is different to driving on hard surfaces. You will need a 4WD vehicle. Be alert and familiar with sand-driving techniques, and only travel at low tide times, stay on harder sand, do not drive or park in the water or the dunes, and slow down for other beach users and wildlife.
Beach driving rules are the same as when driving on a public road. Local Council Law Officers patrol the beach and are delegated with authority to enforce the law, and to cancel or suspend permits if permit conditions are not adhered to. Queensland Police also conduct regular speed checks and random breath testing on the beaches. Download our latest 4WDriving Brochure for detailed information.

4WD's on our Beaches

Beach Fishing North Stradbroke IslandFour wheel driving is only allowed on Flinders Beach and Main Beach and designated access points are outlined in our 4WDriving Brochure and requires a valid Vehicle Access Permit. Four wheel drive vehicles are not permitted on the other beaches, and we suggest that you keep a copy of the 4WDriving Brochure with you as it outlines all the tips & rules relevant to four wheel driving on North Stradbroke Island.
4WD access to beaches may be restricted or closed for the safety of beach users, or for the protection of a species of wildlife and their habitat. In this case beaches will be clearly signed.

Tide Times

Driving is not permitted on our beaches 2 hours before and after high tide. This is both for your safety, and for environmental reasons.

High tide is calculated from published tide times for Brisbane Bar with Main Beach minus approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, and Amity Point and Flinders Beach minus approximately 30 minutes.
