Whale Watching - land based

From June to October each year, a must for all visitors is looking out for the Humpback Whales as they migrate past Point Lookout on their way to and from the breeding grounds in the warmer waters of northern Queensland and Fiji.

Whales can often be spotted from the North Gorge Walk, and are renowned for breaching and slapping the water with their tails and pectorals, giving whale watchers a real treat.

Whale Watching Walking Tours are available during school holidays. See here for details.

North Gorge Walk

A highlight for all visitors to Stradbroke Island is the North Gorge Headland walk. Commencing from the information board at Point Lookout opposite Fishes Cafe, the walk offers spectacular views from the rocky outcrops overlooking the Pacific Ocean and along the Island's white sandy beaches. The view over the gorge is breathtaking.

Explore the headland from one side to the other and you’ll find the two gorges that help define this wild and beautiful terrain. Sit awhile and see passing turtles and dolphins, or manta rays gracefully gliding by. From June to October migrating humpback whales are a common sight.

Goompi Trail

The rich Aboriginal history of North Stradbroke Island centres around Dunwich, home of the Quandamooka People. The Goompi Trail is a historical walk with a local Aboriginal guide, which takes participants on a leisurely 1 hour walk along the foreshore of Dunwich overlooking beautiful Moreton Bay. Learn about Aboriginal artefacts, traditional hunting methods, bush tucker, medicines, traditional ochre's and see the remnants of an old rock fish trap.

The calm tranquility of the lake is entrancing, especially if you visit in the early morning or late afternoon. In spring, wildflowers dot the surrounding bushland. Lake Bummiera has special significance to the local Aboriginal people. If you visit at a quiet time of day you’ll feel the magic.
